Who are the Mapuche Indians and how is Novelle affecting their lives?

Mapuche Indians are the indigenous inhabitants of Central and Southern Chile.  Maqui is revered as a symbol of health, strength, and believed to have profound healing powers by the Mapuche Indians. Besides increasing warmth during the winter months and increased strength and stamina, maqui berries have been traditionally used by the Mapuche Indians for a variety of ailments such as sore throat, diarrhea, ulcers, hemorrhoids, birth delivery, fever and other ailments.

The Mapuche Indians are the only unconquered Native American Indians in the America’s. They have resisted the Inca and Spaniards’ attempt to conquer them. The warriors’ legendary strength and stamina are largely contributed to drinking a fermented maqui drinks several times daily.

Our organic certification projects are helping to prevent further deforestation and industrialization in native forests of the Mapuche Indians. Novelle only employs native Mapuche families to hand harvest the Maqui berries in the native forest.  This is providing them with and additional mean of living as their economy is mainly agricultural based.  With the disappearing native forest, most Mapuche Indians has been forced to move to the larger cities.

A portion of Novelle’s proceeds is returned to the Mapuche Indians to support the traditional Mapuche Medicine and their bilingual education system for the Mapuche children. [top]

Are there studies available supporting the benefits of Maqui?

Preliminary research has shown Maqui berry to inhibit NFkappaB, a key regulator to our inflammatory response.  New research has tied inflammation to over expression of a protein molecule called nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappaB). NF-kappaB acts like a switch to turn on genes that produce the body's inflammatory responses. Because NF-kappaB's expression increases in aging adults and excess inflammation plays a role in many long-term health imbalances, scientists have sought ways to modulate NF-kappaB and its effects in the body. Maqui Superberry helps maintain healthy inflammatory response by naturally inhibiting the NF-kappaB activation.

Recent scientific studies suggest that by inhibiting NF-kappaB, an enzyme known as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) can be reduced. COX-2 inhibition may serve an important function in promoting healthy joint function, normal cell growth in the colon, pancreas, breast tissue, and other organ systems. Maqui Superberry inhibits NF-kappaB, thereby reducing COX 2 enzyme and other pro-inflammatory cytokines that cause pain and inflammation. [top]
